Dean: Democrats will do everything in power to seat delegates

Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 12:45:52 PM PDT

Well folks, maybe we're finally starting to make a little headway on this Florida issue, and just maybe, the voices of Floridians will be heard.

CNN

"It is my commitment, working with the Florida delegation and the campaigns, to find a fair solution so that Florida will be seated -- and we are confident enough that we have reserved hotel rooms for the delegates from Florida in Denver," he said.

The DNC has, at long last, given some kind of a green light to those of us in Florida who want our voices heard.

The Breathtaking Hypocrisy Over Florida

Tue Apr 01, 2008 at 06:56:29 PM PDT

I know that lately Markos has decided that it's convenient to mock and belittle Florida Democrats lately for the sake of the Obama campaign lately, and likewise, the same position has been taken by many other proponents of the Obama campaign.

Yet I did not honestly expect it to involve such a clear abdication of values which had previously been held dear to these same people.  Indeed, almost every plank of the Democratic values system advocated by the likes of Markos, Dean, and Obama, from party unity, to changing the tone, to having every vote count, to the 50-state strategy is compromised in their effort to keep the Florida (and to a lesser extent, Michigan) delegation off of the floor in Denver.

These people need to take a good, hard look at the course of action that they are taking.

The Trek from Edwards to Clinton and the Strength of the Modern Democratic Party

Tue Jan 08, 2008 at 09:26:30 PM PDT

DailyKos, we've been entrenched in an intra-party war between candidates for some time now.  I myself have always found these perspectives limiting: I believe that the Democratic Party of 2008 is the best Democratic Party seen by the American public, ever, and has accordingly presented the best field of primary candidates seen by the American public, ever.  On the heels of a huge victory for the Clinton campaign in New Hampshire, I am both reminded of this strength and greatly encouraged by the prospects for our party and our country in the upcoming election.

In the midst of this intra-party fight, I have moved from supporting John Edwards to supporting Hillary Clinton, in spite of a long-held wariness and animosity of the New York Senator.  More on this, and why 2008 is the best election ever for the United States of America, beyond the fold.

When My English Teacher's Daughter Was Abducted In Iraq

Tue Aug 15, 2006 at 09:17:44 AM PDT

When Jill Carroll was first abducted in January of 2006, I was struck speechless.  As a freshman in college, the Iraq War hardly touched my life--though I knew these billions of dollars were being wasted on the other side of the world, though I knew there was unimaginable suffering, though I knew brave men and women, not all that different from you or I, were dying daily, it was all something that could be turned off with the pressing of a computer or telivision button.  When Jill Carroll was abducted in Iraq, I was snapped out of that world, and the pain and suffering of the American people involved was brought to the forefront of my mind.  My senior year Honors Humanities teacher, Mary Beth Carroll, was the mother of this young woman who'd been taken by the terrorists, and to have such a momentous event strike so close to home made all the difference in the world.

Music Education and the Republican Assault

Sun Apr 30, 2006 at 11:17:54 AM PDT

"Secondary students who participated in band or orchestra reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances (alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs)." -- Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse Report. Reported in Houston Chronicle, January 1998

When was the last time that you heard something good about the public education system?  In my entire life, it's always seemed that my education has had to have been cut short--lack of funds, lack of teachers, lack of interest.  As a student of music, I have learned to accept the fact that more often than not, music and the arts will be the first thing on the chopping block when the Republicans screw up the country again.  However, I am here to tell you why that is a falsehood of practice, and why music in our public schools is possibly the most important subject to be taught to struggling and troubled students.
