VA Primary Results Open Thread [Update "2"]

Tue Jun 14, 2005 at 06:25:50 PM PDT

Let's just get to the facts quickly:

Democratic Party:

L L Byrne         36,647     33.95%
V O Baskerville     25,300     23.44%
J C Petersen         24,326     22.54%
P P Puckett         21,656     20.07%

Petersen and Byrne did split the NOVA vote, but not enough to knock them both out of the race.  Byrne won.  She was the Representative whom Davis the adulterer defeated in '94.

2.45% turnout so far (96% reporting). Abysmal, but compared to the Republican's 3.9% turnout it's not so bad considering we only had 1 statewide contested office compared to 3 contested Republican ones. Republican Party: (who cares about the percentages?)

Gov : Kilgore
Lt Gov : Bolling
AG : McDonnell

ATTN College Students (and free speech gurus)

Thu Nov 04, 2004 at 07:58:33 PM PDT

As we all know, many of our collegues voted for Bush.  We also know that there are serious man power shortages over in Iraq.  We also know that many of our friends on the other side believe that we need to "stay the course" and "finish the job we started" over there.

Given these facts I propose we make up some nice signs encouraging them to help!  After all it's what they believe in right?

At my school printing costs 5 cents a page, shouldn't cost too much to print up a couple hundred.  Free speech gurus (ben masel you there?) what is the case law w/ respect to students posting anything they want on school bulletin boards?  Thanks in advance.

Give to congressional candidates! 15 more minutes!

Student voter registration problems...sigh

Fri Sep 24, 2004 at 10:00:01 AM PDT

This is more of a rant than anything else...But ok so I know this girl who wants to vote this November.  She's from Michigan.  Well wouldn't you know it but Michigan has this rule where you cannot vote absentee the first time!  What better way to institutionally supress the student vote?  Secretary of State?  Republican.
So I am going to try to get her registered to vote in Virginia, which is legal as students are counted as living where they school during the census.  Any bets on whether I'm going to run into problems?  I definately will.  For my city is Williamsburg, you might remember it from last spring as the city which illegally denied student registrations because they were afraid of us taking over a few of the spots on the city council.

I'll keep you updated.  The deadline in VA is 29 days prior to the election which is early October.

Captions for Two Faced Bush photo

Thu Sep 23, 2004 at 08:04:20 PM PDT

If the photo is stretched to "fit on one page" before printing there is a good inch above and below the photo where we can add text.

Following are a few suggestions of mine. Also, I think if the photo is split down the middle, and rotated then you could have a white space in the middle for text, though recognizing Bush would be harder and you'd have to use really short words.

McGreevey, story's still developing.

Fri Sep 10, 2004 at 02:05:27 PM PDT

And you thought the scandal was over!

Apparently Republicans? two Princeton trial lawyers (one a noted local Green activist) have filed a case in Federal Court which seeks to force upon New Jersey an election which is not called for in New Jersey state code.  As you are well aware, I am sure, the only times elections are held are every 4 years (the normal election cycle), or for special events, like death, impeachment, or resignations prior to September 3rd.  As you can tell, none of these conditions apply.

However, these two hot trial lawyers claim that saying you are resigning is the same as actually resigning.

That must go along with the fact that claiming you are the party of family virtues actually meaning you ARE the party of family values.  Nevermind the huge deficit/child tax behind the curtain; nevermind Bob Barr, Tom Davis, or Newt Gingrich; nevermind the treatment of poor children; nevermind their incessant desire to destroy and deny GBLT families; nevermind their assault on poor working class families through cuts in health care and cuts in education.

DR who claimed to be Cipel's lover arrested (McGreevey related law enforcement program activities)

Fri Aug 20, 2004 at 05:21:24 PM PDT

This story gets weirder and weirder.
The Star-Ledger reported that Miller falsely told police he is a CIA operative and that the satellite dish on his house is used for CIA communications. The doctor also is accused of calling authorities and alleging that he knew someone who was planning to blow up the Essex County courthouse.

Somebody's teeth fillings need to be realigned.

And Cipel is STILL saying he's straight.

However, Cipel says he is heterosexual and was subjected to sexual harassment by McGreevey. His lawyer has said the extortion claims are false and that the governor's representatives offered money to Cipel to keep him quiet. Cipel has also denied Miller's claims.

US Olympic Anthem Music

Thu Aug 19, 2004 at 06:38:10 PM PDT

What's up with it?  Halfway through the song they change to some lame ass high pitched strings going solo so you can't even sign along.  Normally I love strings, but this is a fricking drinking song!  Nothing too high pitched.  Drunk people need to be able to sign along.

And did you see Amanda Beard's earrings?  Wow.

voters still can vote for Bush
after all his lies.

I can't read. Discuss. :)

Losing a friend

Fri Jul 09, 2004 at 06:34:30 PM PDT

Today I had to put my best friend of fifteen and one half years to sleep.  I am still crying as I write these words.  Lady picked me out when I was a young eight year old boy running through the pound looking for a new pet.  Growing up she did the normal dog things, you know, like chewing inappropriatedly, destroying books and tv electric wires.  She'd piss all over the floor, look you in the eye and melt your anger away.  We'd sleep together at night in a pullout bed because she refused to be lifted into a loft.  Did I mention she is an award winner?  Second funniest dog in all of Fairfax County Virginia.  I'm sure she outlived the first place winner.

Just saw Control Room

Sat Jul 03, 2004 at 05:58:55 PM PDT

Suprisingly the theater was almost 3/4 full, although it was a small theater.  I had seen the large man on the Daily Show so I had a small idea about what to expect.

Watching the movie only reinforced in me the feeling that our media is ballless.  Al Jazeera has been banned in several countries because they were taking stances with which the government did not agree.  American Media have no such luxery.  American media also have the problem of competitors; if a network runs or asks something with which the current administration disagrees then the current administration stops giving them access (c.f.  Helen Thomas)

Carlyle Group Acquiring Lowes

Mon Jun 21, 2004 at 02:37:23 PM PDT

I should probably explain that Lowes is a movie theater, for those who don't know what it is. It's in here, but you gotta look in the article for it, it's mingled in with various other business info.

So now the Military-Industrial Complex is purchasing popular movie outlets.  Any bet on whether or not they would have allowed Farenheit 911 to show?  How long until they start purchasing tv news outlets, book publishing companies, print outlets, etc.

Consolidation of ownership, ideas, and culture marches on one purchase at a time.

Bush said imminent threat

Fri May 28, 2004 at 09:29:03 PM PDT

I'm reading John Dean's book as I type.  Page 134, Dean quotes The National Security Strategy of the United States of America which is a report mandadted by law.  The report says "the legitimacy of preemption" rests" on the existence of an imminent threat" citing internation law.

As  Bush went to war preemptively, he himself has called it a preemptive action, he justified this war because there was an imminent threat.

Are you gonna blame this one on the staffers Bush?  Do you not read what you sign?
